Looking back at the ForestValue2 Conference 2024 – From WoodWisdom-Net to ForestValue – 20 years of pioneering progress in European Forestry & Wood Tech
The two-day ForestValue 2 Conference from WoodWisdom-Net to ForestValue – 20 years of pioneering progress in European Forestry & Wood Tech was held on October 1–2, 2024, in Berlin. This marked a significant milestone in European forestry and wood technology, celebrating 20 years of pioneering progress from WoodWisdom-Net to ForestValue. Industry leaders, researchers, policymakers, and stakeholders gathered to review past achievements and explore the future of the forest-based bioeconomy. The event featured a dynamic blend of presentations, panel discussions, and interactive sessions focused on driving transformation, showcasing innovative research, and forging new partnerships for a sustainable future.
The conference underscored the importance of innovation and collaboration in European forestry, setting a foundation for addressing climate challenges and promoting sustainable development for the next 20 years. Presentations and recordings from the event are available on the conference's official website.

Strategic Communication in Research: Embedding Effective Outreach from Day One
As part of the ForestValue2 Conference 2024, a Communication Workshop was held, primarily for the funded projects of ForestValue2 JC2023. Led by Rhonda Smith from Minerva Communications UK, the workshop attracted over 20 participants.
The key takeaway is, that strategic thinking is embedded into planning research proposals and their delivery but when it comes to communications and dissemination activities, this logical approach is often missing.
‘What did we do last time?’
‘We don’t have money to invest in this activity.’
‘I have no time to spend on this.’
‘Too busy doing the research and writing my papers.’
These are the common responses when – again too often – this critical activity is brought up towards the end of a research project.
However, data from a cross-section of EU funded projects tells us that if communication actions are planned and allowed for in proposals and budgets and applied from Day One they deliver exponential benefits. Outreach, engagement, on-going project and personal recognition coupled with positive social impact metrics all deliver an upward ‘curve’.

ForestValue2 Scientific cafés
To tackle strategic issues in the forestry sector and foster discussion and communication among stakeholders, FV2 has introduced the concept of the Scientific Café. This format, complementing traditional workshops and webinars, offers informal, in-person conversations—enhanced with coffee and pastries—between researchers, experts, institutions, and citizens on current scientific topics, blending scientific communication with public engagement. The Scientific Cafés, held in the various FV2 partner countries contribute to circulating reliable information by increasing the awareness of participants and to collecting ideas and suggestions for future lines of research and management, representing an inclusive and participatory model.
The next Scientific Café will he organised by the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry of Finland this November, focusing on strengthening biodiversity in Finnish forests.
The event will bring together young people to discuss and generate ideas about one of the largest challenges related to forests today. Researchers Minna Räty and Mikko Kurttila from the Natural Resources Institute (LUKE) will introduce the topic and facilitate the discussion.

Open Science in Forestry Sector
The ForestValue2 Open Science Seminar, hosted in 10th of September 2024 in collaboration with the Forestvalue2 JC2023-funded project CRESTIMB, showcased open research practices in the forestry sector. Featuring speakers included Dr. Maria Pawlowska and Dr. Rainer Krug. The seminar focused on the principles of open science, transparency in research, and collaborations through platforms like Open Research Europe, represented by Sam Hall. These initiatives aim to enhance accessibility to scientific data and knowledge. The seminar emphasized the benefits of open science for innovation and sustainable forestry practices.
The UNESCO Open Science Toolkit was described. It is designed to support the implementation of the UNESCO Recommendation on Open Science, the first international standard-setting instrument on open science.

Monitoring of forests in the age of remote sensing and modelling
The “Marin Drăcea” National Institute for Research and Development in Forestry, Romania, organised an international webinar „Monitoring of forests in the age of remote sensing and modelling”.
This scientific event took place in Brasov, on 24th of October, 2024, 14:00 CET in hybrid format, at the Rectorate of Transylvania University, Research Hub.
The main objective of this scientific event was to bring policy, science, and practice together in the field of forest monitoring, including national and international levels and to communicate and exchange on the successes, opportunities and challenges related to the topic addressed about the respective stakeholder groups. This webinar will further strengthen close collaboration within and among scientific community and stakeholder groups.

WoodLCC – Life Cycle Costing (LCC): Optimizing the Lifetime Performance of Timber Buildings
WoodLCC: Advancing Timber Construction
WoodLCC considers a range of factors, including design, material properties, location, maintenance, and use intensity, to deliver holistic LCC estimates. By incorporating data on wood material costs, labour, installation, and degradation rates, the project seeks to optimize timber buildings’ lifecycle from design to end-of-life.
The project, running from April 2022 to April 2025, integrates LCC tools with Building Information Modelling (BIM), allowing the evaluation of wood performance over time. Three partners (Holzforschung Austria, Thünen Institute Hamburg, and Slovak University of Technology Bratislava) have been added to provide expertise in wood coatings, durability, and architectural design.
Milestones and Future Impact
WoodLCC has reached significant milestones, including simulations of rain, moisture, solar exposure, and aesthetic changes in wood. A prototype plug-in, compatible with industry-standard design software, is now available, enabling architects and engineers to simulate real-life conditions and optimize timber structures’ durability and cost-effectiveness.
The project’s outcomes offer a solid foundation for future research and advancements in sustainable timber construction.
