Save the date for the 3rd General Stakeholder Workshop and the 3rd EUFORE Project Meeting in October

As the summer holidays approach and many of us prepare to take a well-earned break, it’s also the perfect moment to look ahead and mark your calendars for an important event this autumn. The 3rd General Stakeholder Workshop and the 3rd EUFORE Project Meeting will be held jointly with the Mid-Term Seminar of Funded Projects JC2023 and the Conference of Funded Projects JC2021, all under the umbrella of ForestValue2.
This collaborative event, titled “Shaping the Future of Forest Research & Innovation”, will take place on October 14–15, 2025 in Brussels. It will bring together key actors from across Europe to exchange knowledge, showcase project results, and help shape the future direction of forest-related research and policy. Don’t forget to add it to your calendar before heading off for the summer!

Reflecting on Summer Training Course: Forest Health and Monitoring in the Age of Remote Sensing

The ForestValue2 Summer Training Course “Forest Health and Monitoring in the Age of Remote Sensing” took place in Brașov, Romania, from May 12–16, 2025. Organized by the “Marin Drăcea” National Institute for Research and Development in Forestry (INCDS) in collaboration with Transilvania University of Brașov, the course brought together participants from across Europe to explore the use of active sensors in forest monitoring. Through hands-on sessions and expert-led lectures, attendees were introduced to advanced methods combining active remote sensing. This included Earth Observation data, Close-Range Terrestrial Laser Scanning, and Aerial Laser Scanning — with in-situ measurements, promoting collaborative learning and knowledge exchange.

Shaping the Future: The Forest & Forestry Partnership Takes Form

The Consortium Development Meeting for the Candidate Co-funded European R&I Partnership "Forests and Forestry for a Sustainable Future" under Horizon Europe (Cluster 6 Work Plan 2025) was held on June 17–18, 2025. Representatives from 28 Member States and Associated Countries convened to review recent developments, refine the partnership's structure, and advance the preparation of work packages spanning Horizon scanning (WP2), research calls (WP3), additional activities (WP4), international cooperation (WP5), communication (WP6), exploitation (WP7), and partnership management (WP1). The meeting concluded with agreement on key next steps and a commitment to continue coordination, with the next online meeting scheduled for 1st of September, 2025.

Social Relevance of Ecosystem Services Provided by Urban Green Infrastructures: A Mixed Qualitative–Quantitative Case Study Approach

We are pleased to share the outcomes of the ForestValue2 Scientific Café held in Italy, which resulted in an article by Sofia Baldessari, Isabella De Meo, Maria Giulia Cantiani, and Alessandro Paletto.
The article focuses on Urban green infrastructures (UGIs) which play a crucial role in enhancing city life by providing essential ecological functions and ecosystem services. The study underscores the importance of UGIs in climate change mitigation, biodiversity conservation, and cultural services such as public health and recreation. Stakeholders especially appreciate their contribution to well-being, urban aesthetics, and microclimate regulation. The authors advocate for a participatory governance model to fully realize these benefits.
The image below shows co-occurrence network map considering the keywords directly related to the ecosystem services provided by UGIs.

CRESTIMB Project Gathers Pace with Strong Progress in Research and Testing

A new slip‑friction moment‑resisting connector for timber construction—tested on full‑scale CLT beam‑to‑column joints—has demonstrated outstanding stiffness under normal loads and robust ductility under extreme stress. The system, combining screwed threaded‑rod connections with steel couplings, maintained its strength even beyond service limits, causing only minor timber damage during overload tests.
This effort is being spearheaded by the CRESTIMB (InCREased Service life of innovative TIMber Building systems) project, funded by ForestValue2 and coordinated by VTT with partners across Europe. CRESTIMB aims to develop a ground‑breaking, multi‑storey timber system featuring glue‑laminated moment‑resisting frames and dowelled CLT floors, with a focus on long‑term performance, disassembly, reuse, and numerical modelling of wood rheology for 100‑year service life. By integrating research, real-world testing, and models under variable indoor climates, the project marks a significant step toward taller, more sustainable, and resilient timber architecture. Image below shows the test setup, you can find the full article here.

Catalogue of Results from the 2017 ForestValue Joint Call is now available

We are pleased to share the final version of the Catalogue of Results from the 2017 ForestValue Joint Call. This publication brings together the outcomes of 17 transnational R&D projects that offer innovative solutions for sustainable forest management, wood processing technologies, and forest-based bioeconomy development. The catalogue aims to inform, inspire, and connect stakeholders across Europe by showcasing 49 results—ranging from policy insights to cutting-edge prototypes and methodologies.
