The application deadline for the ForestValue2 Summer Training Course “Dendroscience, a Tool to Understand Future Forest Resilience to Climate Change” has been extended until 25 June 2026.

Organised by the “Marin Drăcea” National Institute for Research and Development in Forestry (INCDS), Romania, within the framework of the ForestValue2 – Innovating Forest-Based Bioeconomy project (Grant Agreement No. 101094340), the course will take place in Brașov, Romania, from 24–29 August 2026.

Why Participate?

Climate change is placing increasing pressure on forest ecosystems across Europe. Understanding how trees respond to environmental stress is essential for developing effective adaptation and management strategies. This summer training course will provide early-stage researchers with practical and scientific expertise in dendroscience, focusing on the use of tree-ring parameters to assess drought impacts, forest resilience, and climate–growth relationships.

Participants will gain:

  • Dendrochronological expertise through theoretical and practical training in tree-ring science, sampling techniques, measurements, and chronology development.
  • Climate resilience assessment skills, including climate–growth relationship analyses, resilience assessment methods, and pointer-year analysis.
  • Applied knowledge that bridges scientific research and forest management practices, supporting climate adaptation and decision-making.
  • Opportunities for interdisciplinary collaboration with researchers and experts working in ecology, climatology, hydrology, and related environmental sciences.
Who Can Apply?

The training course is intended for early-stage researchers with little or no previous experience in dendroscience, including:

  • Master’s students; PhD candidates; Postdoctoral researchers; Other early-career research professionals

Applicants must belong to a partner institution within the ForestValue2 project. Priority is given to researchers from the EU-13 countries (Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Estonia, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Malta, Poland, Romania, Slovakia, and Slovenia), as well as Ukraine and the Republic of Moldova.

Participation is limited to 20 trainees.

Financial Support

All selected participants will receive financial support through the ForestValue2 project, covering:

  • Travel expenses; Accommodation: Subsistence costs
Distinguished Lecturers

The course will be led by internationally recognised experts:

  • Prof. Dr. Tom Levanič, Slovenian Forestry Institute, Slovenia
  • Dr. Ionel Popa, Head of the Dendrochronology and Wood Anatomy Laboratory, “Marin Drăcea” National Institute for Research and Development in Forestry, Romania
Venue

The training course will be hosted by: “Marin Drăcea” National Institute for Research and Development in Forestry (INCDS), Brașov, Romania, Transilvania University of Brașov
