InFutUReWood project news – learn about the experiences of three industrial partners
InFutUReWood is a ForestValue project focusing on the reuse of current reclaimed wood in the circular economy as structural material but also on creating a “design for deconstruction” for future building.
During the last project meeting that took place online on 25-26 October 2021, three industrial partners reported about their experiences in working with “Design of timber structures for the future”, a work package led by Ylva Sandin, researcher at RISE, Sweden. Here are their stories. (PDF)

ForestValue Joint Call 2021 – Joint selection list of projects recommended for funding published
Based on the ranking list by the International Expert Panel and available national funding, the Call Steering Committee of ForestValue Joint Call 2021 decided in its meeting on 15 September 2021 to select eight (8) projects to be recommended for funding. The joint selection list is available here.
The published information includes the project title, coordinator and other involved countries as well as a short description of the project objective. More detailed data on the selected projects can be published only after the national funding contracts have been confirmed. The projects (project duration of 36 months for each) are expected to start late 2021/ early 2022.

FORESTVALUE JOINT CALL IN 2021 IS CLOSED (published 21-04-2021)
The ForestValue Call for for joint European research projects in 2021 is now closed and by the deadline (13 April 2021) 60 proposals were submitted.
All applications are now subject to confidential evaluation as described in the Call Text. The first proposal assessment phase – the formal eligibility check performed by the Call Office – is already finished and from a total number of 60 submitted proposals 47 passed this phase. The coordinators of all research consortia have been informed of the outcome.
Next, these 47 proposals will be checked by the participating funding agencies for their eligibility in line with the restrictions laid down in the Specific National Rules in Annex IV to the Call Text. The proposals which will eventually pass the national eligibility check will then be scientifically evaluated by the International Expert Panel with regard to the criteria laid down in Annex I to the Call Text. At the end of the evaluation process, the International Expert Panel will determine on one final ranking list of proposals and based on the ranking list and the available national funding, the funding organisations will decide on the projects to be funded.
As announced, the first projects are expected to get started late 2021/ early 2022.

The participating funders (15 funders from 10 countries) have decided that the call will address the whole forest-based value chain in the following three areas:
1. Sustainable and multifunctional use and management of forests, to maximize their contribution to all SDGs
2. Building with wood from various perspectives
3. Analysis of benefits, synergies and trade-offs in the use of forest biomass
Besides the funding agencies listed in the Call Text, there are two Estonian funders who have joined the call as additional funding partners: Estonian Ministry of the Environment and Estonian Research Council. For more information, please see the call website (link below).
Partners from countries, which are not participating in the Joint Call, are also encouraged to join a consortium (as additional partners). These so-called “third country” partners must finance their activities from other sources and need to state in advance the source of funding for their part in the project. 2021-03-15: Detailed characterization of enzymatically treated cellulosic fibres – FunEnzFibres stakeholder-oriented article no 2
FunEnzFibres is a ForestValue transnational project aiming at unraveling the potential of lytic polysaccharide monooxygenases (LPMOs) in modification of wood cellulosic fibres for material solutions, in particular textile fibres and nanocelluloses. The project is carried out by VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland Ltd, Norwegian University of Life Sciences (NMBU) and University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences (BOKU, Austria) in collaboration with a network of industrial partners.

2021-02-04: Updating the Database of Forest Disturbances in Europe – I-MAESTRO stakeholder-oriented article 1
In I-MAESTRO, the European Forest Institute (EFI) is aiming together with partners to fill the data gap between 2001-2020 in the Database of Forest Disturbances in Europe (DFDE). I-MAESTRO is currently asking partners to provide data on forest disturbance from the last 20 years. This data will be used to make an update of the paper “Natural disturbances in the European forests in the 19th and 20th centuries” published in 2003 in the journal Global Change Biology, and to make scenarios on future disturbances for the modelling in I-MAESTRO. I-MAESTRO – Innovative forest management strategies for a resilient bioeconomy under climate change and disturbances – improves the scientific basis for developing management strategies that increase resilience for future natural disturbances and climate change, while maintaining a high level of wood production, carbon storage, and habitat quality for biodiversity.

2021-01-11: SMALLWOOD report “Unmanned aerial vehicle photography and photogrammetry in the Smallwood project” published
The ForestValue project SMALLWOOD has published two interesting promotional videos on the project website, both videos using a drone. Now, the project has published a report which is to explain the potential of remote sensing using unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) photogrammetry for complimentary analysis. “The study showed that there is great potential for using photogrammetric remote sensing to augment field study results such as thinning intensity estimation, biomass concentration analysis, strip road terrain profiling, and more.“

GreenLane is a ForestValue transnational project aiming at developing a virtual supply chain laboratory environment enabling value-tracking and interactive testing of harvesting and transport responses to challenging climate scenarios. 2020-12-17: ForestValue Joint Call 2021 – Updated pre-announcement
The ForestValue Research Programme announced earlier about a new upcoming call for joint European research projects and that the call for proposals is expected to open in January 2021. The funders have spent the autumn preparing the call and now the plan is to get the call opened on 19 January 2021, this is when the full information package should be available, too.
This time, with no co-funding from the European Commission, the participating funders (15 funders from 10 countries) have decided that the call will address the whole forest-based value chain in the following three areas:
1. Sustainable and multifunctional use and management of forests, to maximize their contribution to all SDGs
2. Building with wood from various perspectives

2020-09-23: ForestValue Joint Call 2 pre-announcement
The ForestValue Research Programme announces the upcoming call for joint European research projects with an indicative total public funding budget of over 7 million €. The call for proposals is expected to open in January 2021 and the selected projects are supposed to start late 2021/early 2022.
As mentioned in the pre-announcement, the call will support basic and applied research and is focussed on solutions how forests and forest-based activities could best contribute to reaching the Sustainable Development Goals. This joint transnational call will address the whole forest-based value chain and will produce knowledge to support the best possible use of forests and forest resources as well as to provide multiple benefits for society and the economy. The precise topics are to be defined by the participating funders; however, the topics will be broad and crosscutting and the call will aim to encourage and make best use of cross-sectoral, coherent and integrated perspective (nexus approach).

2020-05-21: Multi-varietal plantation forestry of conifers as chance for the future? MULTIFOREVER stakeholder-oriented article no 1
MULTIFOREVER is a ForestValue transnational project focused on developing conifer somatic embryogenesis towards this multi-varietal forestry strategy. The overall aim is to develop a value-added chain and joint strategy to bring high-quality somatic trees at acceptable costs into planted forests. Combining our long-standing expertise in different commercially relevant conifer species, we will be able to exchange experience, achievements (including field trials) and materials as well as to tackle still unresolved issues to refine the somatic embryogenesis process. 2020-05-15: Dynamic Response of Tall Timber Buildings under Service Load (DynaTTB) – first results
DynaTTB is a ForestValue transnational project with an overall objective is to identify experimentally a number of full-scale Tall Timber Building (TTB) structures within Europe and, based on these results, develop representative Finite Element (FE) models for predicting the vibration response of TTBs exposed to wind-induced dynamic loading. During December 2019 and January 2020 full-scale measurements were performed on the first two buildings, CSTB performed measurements on the building Treed-It in Paris and University of Exeter performed measurements on the building Yoker in Glasgow. 2020-05-06: ForestValue planning a new Joint Call for RDI Proposals
ForestValue has decided to start planning a new transnational call for proposals for research, development and innovation in the forest-based sector. This 2nd joint call would be a self-sustained call i.e. the funding to the call would come from the participating funders only without any co-funding from the European Commission.
All call details are still open, however, assuming all progresses as planned, the intention is to have the call launched in January 2021.

2019-10-08: ForestValue outreach seminar for international collaboration – “Innovative Forest-Based Bioeconomy for the Future” in Buenos Aires, Argentina
The international workshop “Innovative Forest-Based Bioeconomy for the Future” provided a platform for all initiatives engaged in forest-based Bioeconomy in Europe and South/Central America. Ca. 70 participants from academia, industry and governmental organisations learned about current research (funding) activities in several Latin American countries and discussed opportunities for transatlantic cooperation and joint funding in the field of forest-based Bioeconomy.

2019-05-23: ForestValue Research Programme Kick-Off Seminar 23 – 24 May 2019, Helsinki
The ForestValue Research Programme Kick-Off Seminar was held at the National Museum of Finland in Helsinki on 23rd and 24th of May 2019. The seminar brought together around 70 participants from all around Europe to learn about the 17 projects selected for funding under the 1st Joint Call of the ForestValue Research Programme and to exchange information and ideas among people with a common interest: innovating the forest-based bioeconomy.

2018-12-27: ForestValue Call 2017 – Joint selection list of projects recommended for funding now published
The joint selection list of the 17 European research projects recommended for funding is now published here. The projects – funded by ForestValue funding bodies, with co-funding from the European Commission – will get started early 2019.
The published information includes the project title, coordinator and other involved countries as well as a short description of the project objective. Since the national funding decisions are pending and will be confirmed in the spring 2019, only then more detailed data on the selected projects will be available.
2018-11-08: ForestValue Call 2017 – 17 proposals recommended for funding
The ForestValue Call Steering Committee was able to confirm possible funding for the remaining two more projects on a reserve list. Thus, the final joint selection list of projects recommended for funding includes 17 projects, with a total public funding request of around EUR 21.55 million.
More detailed information on the call statistics will be available soon.
2018-11-07: ForestValue Call 2017 – Full proposal evaluation completed
The evaluation of full proposals under the ForestValue Call for Proposals 2017 is now finished, and on the 25th of October 2018 the ForestValue Call Office has sent out the reply letters to the 49 full proposals submitted by the deadline.
In this call a competitive two-stage submission process was used, and in both phases for each proposal there was first run a check for eligibility and suitability for national funding followed by a central scientific evaluation by a joint and independent international peer review. Each proposal was evaluated by three independent experts.
In Step 2, the full proposals were evaluated based on the evaluation criteria stated in Annex I to the Call Text. First, a remote expert evaluation for all full proposals that passed the eligibility check was run. Finally, the experts had a face-to-face meeting on 1-2 October 2018 to discuss each proposal and to determine on one final ranking list of proposals.
Based on the ranking list, the ForestValue Call Steering Committee decided in its meeting on 16-17 October 2018, in accordance with the H2020 ERA-NET Cofund rules and the national and/or regional budget availability, on the projects to be funded. In total, there are 15 projects recommended for funding and two more projects on a reserve list (the potential funding could not yet be confirmed, the final decision on possible funding for these two projects will be taken on the 8th of November 2018).
Due to the nature of ERA-NET calls ForestValue cannot publish any detailed information on the projects selected for funding until the respective national funding decisions have been finished, which will still take several weeks. Nevertheless, as announced earlier, the projects are expected to get started late 2018 or early 2019.
More detailed information on the call statistics will be published later.

2018-05-17: ForestValue Call 2017 – Step 1 results sent to coordinators
The evaluation of a total number of 114 pre-proposals is now finished and the ForestValue Call Steering Committee decided to invite 50 applicants to submit full proposals.
The Step 1 evaluation included a general eligibility check of the pre-proposals (against criteria defined in Section 5.1 and 5.2 of the ForestValue Call Text) and a national eligibility check (against specific national rules defined in Annex IV of the ForestValue Call Text) as well as an expert evaluation of the pre-proposals, against the criteria defined in Annex I of the ForestValue Call Text.
The selection of pre-proposals invited to submit a full proposal was done by the representatives of the Funding Agencies at a Call Steering Committee meeting, based on the recommendations of the international experts.
The ForestValue Call Office and the Call Steering Committee have taken every step to ensure the fairness and transparency of the evaluation process. Applicants can be sure that their proposals have been assessed according to the published evaluation procedures.
ForestValue would like to thank all applicants for their interest in the ForestValue Call for Research Proposals in 2017, wishing good luck for the invited proposals for Step 2!
2018-05-08: ForestValue Call 2017 – Step 1 evaluation completed
The ForestValue Call was closed on 23rd January 2018 and in total 114 pre-proposals were submitted. The pre-proposals have now been evaluated as described in the Call Text: first for formal eligibility by the Call Office with regard to mandatory eligibility criteria defined in the Call Text (“5. Rules for participation”) and then by the participating funding organisations for the suitability for national funding in line with the restrictions laid down in the Specific National Rules in Annex IV. After these formal eligibility checks the eligible pre-proposals were scientifically evaluated by at least three international experts with regard to the criteria laid down in Annex I to the Call Text.
Now, in its meeting on 2-3 May 2018 the Call Steering Committee has, based on the recommendations of the independent experts, selected those pre-proposals that will be invited to submit a full proposal (Step 2).
The reply letters are currently being prepared, and all research consortia will be informed of the outcome of the evaluation and will receive a short evaluation assessment statement soon, in any case no later than by the end of May 2018 as specified in the Call Text.

The ForestValue Call was closed on 23rd January 2018 and in total 114 pre-proposals were submitted. The great majority, about 70%, of the pre-proposals were assigned by the applicants in the thematic research area B: Innovative industrial production and processing technologies, products, concepts and services. 2018-01-29: Horizon 2020 Work Programme for 2018–2020 – Relevant topics for forest-based sector
The European Forest-based Sector Technology Platform (FTP) has identified around 50 Call topics for the forest-based sector, totaling over EUR 1.5 billion. 2018-01-23: ForestValue Call 2017 – Call closed
The ForestValue Call for Proposals is closed. In total 114 pre-proposals were submitted and the evaluation process has now started. In May 2018 all applicants will be informed about the outcome of the first step evaluation. Deadline for full proposal submission will be August 14th 2018. The 2nd step evaluation process will be finished by the end of October. Projects are expected to start in late 2018 / early 2019.

2018-01-16: ForestValue Call 2017 – NCARE from Jordan withdrawing from the call
The National Center for Agricultural Research and Extension (NCARE) from Jordan has announced that because of internal financial issues they are not able to comply their commitment towards financing the projects submitted through the ForestValue call, and thus they need to withdraw their participation. In this unfortunate case of last-minute change in Jordanian funding the ForestValue Call Office will check the existing pre-proposal registrations and if any registrations with Jordanian partners till today, the respective project coordinator(s) and partner(s) from Jordan will be contacted.
2018-01-15: ForestValue Call 2017 – Funding for Portuguese partners available
ForestValue announces that FCT (the Portuguese national funding agency for science, research and technology) has joined the ForestValue call and is financing Portuguese partners as third country partners in the call with a maximum national commitment of EUR 100,000.00, maximum of EUR 50,000.00 per research/innovation team.

2018-01-04: Stakeholder Consultation on the Research and Innovation Roadmap for European Raw Materials 2050
Participate in the open consultation on a Research & Innovation Roadmap 2050 for the European Raw Materials sector, under preparation by the EU funded research project VERAM – Vision and Roadmap for European Raw Materials.
The Roadmap will lay out key activities required to secure a sustainable and competitive supply of raw materials to European industries, boosting jobs and competitiveness, and contribute to addressing global challenges.
The consultation gives your organisation a chance to influence future R&I funding and the evolution of the raw material sectors in the mid- and long-term perspective. The Roadmap will indirectly influence future priorities of the European Innovation Partnership on Raw Materials (EIP RM) and EU’s framework programmes for research and innovation.

2017-11-15: ForestValue Call 2017 – Partnering opportunity – Networking Webinar
The ForestValue network warmly invites you to join an excellent networking opportunity on November 15th at 2 PM CET which will help you interlink with other excellent researchers and build competitive consortia.

The ForestValue Webinar will start on Wednesday, November 15th at 2 PM CET. In order to sign up for the webinar, applicants need to express their interest by sending three PPT slides including project idea, existing partners/experience and missing profiles by email to Carina Lemke at the Call Office until Friday, 10.11.2017. During the webinar each participant will have ca. 3 minutes to present her/his project idea and existing or needed experience while the PPT slides are shown. The agenda, total length of the webinar and possibility to raise questions will depend on the total number of participants. A link to the webinar and the agenda will be sent to registered participants on 13.11.2017. A table including all information of the webinar will be sent to all webinar participants after the webinar in order to further facilitate the networking.

2017-10-17: ForestValue Call launch
The ForestValue Research Programme is launching a transnational call for proposals for research, development and innovation in the forest-based sector. The indicative total available budget amounts to 25 million € (national public funding including EU top-up funding of 5 million €). The total call volume with industrial co-funding is estimated to be over 30 million €.
The topics of the planned ForestValue joint call will contribute to transforming the global economy from a dependence on fossil and non-renewable raw materials to a sustainable “bio-based economy”.
In this call a competitive two-stage submission process is used. Deadline for submitting pre-proposals is January 23rd 2018 13:00 CET. On 15.11.2017 a networking webinar will be organised to give researchers the chance to interlink with each other and enlarge consortia. Projects are expected to start late 2018/early 2019.
The topic for this ERA-NET Co-fund on innovative forest-based bioeconomy has been prepared in collaboration with three forest-based ERA-NETs to complement the WoodWisdom-Net Research Programme and the targets of the SUMFOREST and FORESTERRA ERA-NETs with a strategic thematic area of high European relevance.
